F1 Bahrain, Steering Wheel Trouble for Alonso
Unfortunately for Fernando Alonso, Friday in Bahrain didn’t bring much satisfaction from a performance perspective.
The Aston Martin car is not competitive – the two-time world champion doesn’t miss an opportunity to emphasize this – and yesterday, it also showed flaws in terms of safety. The steering wheel actually detached from the AMR25 during the beginning of the second free practice session. Luckily, the car wasn’t moving at high speed.
Fernando Alonso’s Words
The mechanics’ quick work allowed Fernando Alonso to return to the track, and the Spaniard wanted to thank them: “The car wasn’t working, and at one point, I couldn’t shift gears. The dash was off, so I couldn’t communicate with the team. Then, at the last corner, the steering wheel came off. We realized that maybe the steering column or something else had an issue. The mechanics quickly changed the parts, and everything was fine: thanks to everyone for fixing everything so quickly. As for the weekend, I think it will be difficult. We were a bit worried about the characteristics of the Bahrain track, and we’ve probably confirmed that we are not competitive.”
Meanwhile, the FIA has opened an investigation into the incident, as a potentially dangerous situation arose. Aston Martin will have to explain to the technical commissioners why the steering wheel detached.
