Remember when Fernando Alonso, during his Ferrari days, stirred the F1 paddock by claiming his real rival wasn’t Sebastian Vettel but Adrian Newey—the designer behind those unbeatable Red Bulls? Now, in the first quarter of 2025, the Spaniard will finally fulfill his dream of collaborating closely with the record-breaking engineer, with hopes of targeting the championship as early as 2026.

Fernando Alonso speaks
There were several occasions in the past when Fernando Alonso and Adrian Newey came close to joining forces, such as at Red Bull. However, according to Fernando Alonso, it was fate that kept them from crossing paths—until now. Aston Martin recently confirmed the signing of the British engineering genius.

“Adrian and I? It was fate,” Fernando Alonso told *BBC Sport* in an extensive interview. “It seems destiny always prevented us from meeting. But now, as he arrives at the tail end of my career, I’ll try to make the most of this opportunity and learn as much as possible from him.”

“We share great mutual respect,” Fernando Alonso added about Adrian Newey. “In the past, we’ve occasionally exchanged messages. It’s as if we’ve always been somehow connected. We’ve never worked together, but whenever we’ve interacted, we’ve always been on the same wavelength. Now we look to the future, and for Aston Martin, his arrival is a monumental step.”
