F1 | Piastri and the Different Car Setup Compared to Norris: New Insight from the McLaren Team
Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are currently driving Formula 1 cars with slightly different technical specifications, a situation that has drawn attention within the McLaren F1 Team. The Woking-based outfit, which is currently enjoying a dominant run in the Constructors’ Championship, is facing a unique internal challenge as its two young and highly competitive drivers are separated by just eight points in the Drivers’ Standings. With the team opting to let them race freely on track, a subtle but significant detail has emerged that may be influencing their respective driving styles.
At the heart of the matter is a small variation in the front suspension layout. Lando Norris has chosen to adopt a newer specification in an attempt to address recurring issues related to the car’s drivability—problems he has often highlighted throughout the season. Oscar Piastri, on the other hand, has decided to retain the previous configuration, which he feels better suits his driving preferences. This technical divergence, while minor in appearance, presents certain logistical and strategic considerations for McLaren.
A Logistical Challenge for the McLaren Team
Team Principal Andrea Stella addressed the situation, offering clarity on how the team is handling the existence of two slightly different setups between its cars. According to Stella, “The different suspension configurations do not complicate the way we collect data, nor do they hinder the process of comparing the performance of the two cars from a technical point of view.”
He went on to explain that the issue is primarily logistical rather than technical: “It’s more about managing the parts themselves. We now need to carry multiple configurations during race weekends. We are currently evaluating whether some of the solutions that Lando has chosen might also be beneficial for Oscar in the future. It’s a situation we’re actively monitoring.”
The Reason Behind Oscar Piastri’s Decision
Oscar Piastri’s decision not to switch to the updated suspension layout is not driven by performance limitations. The Australian driver made it clear that if the modification offered a tangible performance gain, he would have had no hesitation in adopting it. His decision stems from a deeper need to maintain a stable driving sensation and extract consistent performance from the car.
Piastri explained his reasoning: “I haven’t tried it yet. To me, it’s not really an upgrade, but rather something different. It improves certain aspects, but it also worsens others. If it was purely beneficial, I would have fitted it without any second thoughts.”
In a season where the McLaren MCL39 has proven to be the strongest car relative to its direct competitors, Oscar Piastri is focused on preserving the solid feel he has developed with the current configuration. His aim is to maximise the car’s potential by working within a stable setup framework while capitalising on the performance-oriented updates introduced by the team throughout the season.
This behind-the-scenes look into McLaren’s technical decisions illustrates how in modern Formula 1, even the smallest mechanical differences can influence a driver’s confidence and results. In the intense battle for the championship, such nuances could ultimately shape the outcome of the title fight.
