Fernando Alonso did not hold back after the Mexican Grand Prix, openly criticizing the FIA for ignoring drivers who cut the first corner and gained positions without any penalties. The Aston Martin driver expressed his frustration in the post-race interviews, making it clear he found the situation completely unfair.
Alonso explained, “I had a good start, was aggressive at Turn 1, and everything seemed fine. But a couple of cars went straight through Turns 2 and 3 and ended up ahead of me. It’s unfair.”
During the chaotic opening laps, drivers including Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Kimi Antonelli, Carlos Sainz, and Liam Lawson reportedly skipped the initial chicane, rejoining ahead of those, like Fernando Alonso, who followed the correct racing line. Oscar Piastri also went wide but managed to rejoin before the second corner.
Alonso speaks out on radio
Immediately, Fernando Alonso warned his race engineer Andrew Vizard over the radio. “I was ahead of Sainz and others, but they cut Turn 2 and now there are three cars ahead. It’s very unfair, something needs to be done,” he said angrily. Vizard replied in a resigned tone, “We saw everything, we are reporting it, but we know they don’t understand the consequences.”
Post-race criticism
After the race, Fernando Alonso went further in criticizing race control: “This is the second time in a row this has happened. The FIA looks the other way on the first lap. Lesson learned.”
Fernando Alonso’s comments reignite debate over the consistency of FIA decisions, a topic that often resurfaces after chaotic starts like the one in Mexico City.
