Fernando Alonso retires at Monza due to front-right suspension failure
Fernando Alonso faced another setback at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix as he was forced to retire after his Aston Martin suffered a front-right suspension failure. The issue occurred just after the Ascari chicane, shortly after Alonso had overtaken Gabriel Bortoleto and was pushing towards the points.
A season marked by misfortune
Fernando Alonso reflected on the string of retirements that have hampered his 2025 campaign. He explained that the team had executed another strong weekend, climbing positions early in the race, but luck was once again not on their side. He cited previous misfortunes, including the Monaco GP where he retired from sixth place, emphasizing that today’s suspension failure robbed him of valuable points.
“We were running in seventh, it had been another well-executed weekend. We passed Antonelli at the start and then Gabriel Bortoleto during the pit stop. Everything was going well, but luck turned against us again. In Monaco we lost the car from sixth place, today the suspension from seventh… many points vanish due to bad luck,” Fernando Alonso said.
Strong start at the Italian GP
Despite the disappointing finish, Fernando Alonso acknowledged that the opening stages of the race had gone well. He highlighted the quality of his qualifying and the solid management of the first 30 laps. The mechanical issue, however, cost the team at least six points, leaving Alonso frustrated but determined to keep pushing.
“It had been a well-executed race… our qualifying was strong, and we managed the first 30 laps effectively. But these mechanical problems are very costly, and we’ll lose at least six points today. It’s frustrating, but unfortunately, I’m getting used to it. We make fewer mistakes and work better, yet luck continues to favour our rivals. We will keep fighting and always give our best. Now it’s time to focus on the next race,” he explained.
Looking ahead to Azerbaijan
The next race on the calendar is the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, scheduled from 19 to 21 September. Alonso is determined to recover as many points as possible to compensate for this season’s string of misfortunes. Currently, he sits 12th in the drivers’ championship with 30 points, just two behind his teammate. Had he not retired in Monza and Monaco, Alonso would be in ninth place, comfortably ahead of Lance Stroll.
Despite these setbacks, Fernando Alonso remains focused on delivering strong results in the remaining races of the 2025 season, with the aim of turning the tide for himself and the Aston Martin team.
