Fernando Alonso looks ahead to 2026
The outcome of the Miami weekend certainly didn’t favor Aston Martin, which ended the sixth GP of the year in the last positions among the drivers who reached the finish line. In Florida, the AMR25 was the worst car on the grid in terms of race pace, and the impression is that things may only get worse from here, as the team increasingly shifts its resources toward 2026.
Clearly, the Silverstone-based team is placing its hopes on the new technical cycle that begins next year, as shown by the massive investments from owner Lawrence Stroll to secure Adrian Newey, other top-tier engineers, and a new wind tunnel.
Fernando Alonso’s words
This may be why Fernando Alonso, still scoreless in the championship, remains calm despite the series of race incidents going against him (like the team’s delayed switch to slicks during the Miami Sprint). The two-time world champion knows he only has to endure a few more months before cashing in: “The goal is to win the World Championship in 2026,” he told AS. “Are we getting closer? We’ll only know next February. But we’ve signed the best designer in history, we have a new wind tunnel, and unfortunately this year we have 19 races where we have to show up after results that don’t go our way, that don’t earn us points, and still say we’re positive. It sounds contradictory to people, but we are positive.”
“I trust my feelings and my performances. In Miami, I managed to get into SQ3 with a car that we all saw on Sunday was 20 seconds behind others and in serious trouble. In the Sprint, I was fighting for the podium with Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon in tough mixed conditions. We’re aware of the car’s limitations, but personally I’m not worried,” he concluded.
