Fernando Alonso backs Honda despite Aston Martin’s troubled 2026 F1 season

Fernando Alonso believes Honda deserves another chance to prove itself in Formula 1 in 2027, despite the manufacturer’s disappointing return as Aston Martin’s works power unit partner under the 2026 regulations. The two-time world champion acknowledged that the collaboration began badly but hopes the upcoming changes to Formula 1’s engine rules will help the Japanese manufacturer become more competitive.

The Spaniard’s comments represent a more encouraging message towards Honda after a season marked by major technical difficulties and considerable frustration. Aston Martin’s ambitious project has fallen far short of expectations, leaving the Silverstone-based team second from bottom in the Constructors’ Championship, ahead of only Cadillac, despite the enormous investment made by team owner Lawrence Stroll.

Fernando Alonso believes Honda deserves another chance in F1 2027

Fernando Alonso has been one of Aston Martin’s few consistent strengths during a deeply disappointing 2026 campaign. The experienced driver has repeatedly maximised the potential of a car that has struggled to compete with the majority of the Formula 1 grid, helping the team remain ahead of Cadillac in the championship standings.

However, the Aston Martin AMR26 desperately needs further improvements if the team is to achieve its long-term ambitions. Adrian Newey’s mid-season developments have brought progress on the chassis side, but the Honda power unit remains a substantial weakness.

The Japanese manufacturer has struggled to match the performance of its rivals throughout the opening season of Formula 1’s new technical era. Honda’s difficulties have affected Aston Martin’s overall competitiveness, preventing the team from taking full advantage of the improvements introduced to its chassis.

Fernando Alonso has frequently expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance gap between Honda and the other power unit manufacturers, including during recent race weekends. Nevertheless, the two-time world champion believes the Japanese company should be given another opportunity to deliver the improvements Aston Martin requires.

Fernando Alonso hopes 2027 F1 engine changes will help Aston Martin

The changes planned for Formula 1’s power unit regulations offer Fernando Alonso a reason to remain cautiously optimistic. A revised balance between internal combustion and electrical power is intended to address some of the difficulties experienced under the current rules.

“In 2027, with the 60-40 split and the second year under the regulations, perhaps there will be a slightly better compromise in that respect, so let’s give it another go,” Fernando Alonso explained.

The Spaniard hopes that the second season of the current technical era, combined with adjustments to the power unit regulations, will create conditions in which Aston Martin and Honda can make more meaningful progress.

For the Silverstone-based team, the challenge will be to combine further improvements to Adrian Newey’s chassis with a considerably stronger power unit. Although Honda has already attempted to address its performance deficit during 2026, those developments have not yet produced the breakthrough Aston Martin needs.

With the manufacturer preparing for another important development phase, Fernando Alonso believes it would be premature to abandon confidence in the partnership after one unsuccessful season.

Fernando Alonso acknowledges Honda uncertainty but remains confident

Fernando Alonso recognises that there are no guarantees Honda will overcome its difficulties in 2027. The Japanese manufacturer’s performance remains a significant question mark, particularly after the problems experienced throughout its first season as Aston Martin’s exclusive works partner.

Nevertheless, the two-time world champion is prepared to give the collaboration more time, even after the frustration caused by the considerable difference between Honda’s power unit and those of its competitors.

“Let’s give Honda another opportunity, even though we got off on the wrong foot and there is a question mark over what will happen next year. But I think they deserve another chance, and I feel strong,” Fernando Alonso said.

His remarks highlight the contrast between Aston Martin’s disappointing present and its ambitions for the future. The team has invested heavily in its facilities, technical structure and engineering personnel, while Adrian Newey’s involvement is intended to establish the foundations of a competitive Formula 1 project.

However, those ambitions depend heavily on Honda making substantial improvements. Without a more competitive power unit, even significant chassis development may not be sufficient to move Aston Martin towards the front of the grid.

For Fernando Alonso, the priority is to approach 2027 with renewed determination rather than abandon hope following a difficult campaign. Despite acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding Honda’s progress, the Spaniard remains confident in his own abilities and believes the manufacturer deserves the opportunity to demonstrate what it can achieve during the second year of the new Formula 1 technical era.
