Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has revealed how he handled Toyota’s ambitions to place Ryo Hirakawa in a Formula 1 race seat before ultimately selecting Rafael Câmara for the 2027 season. Despite the Japanese manufacturer’s close relationship with Haas, Ayao Komatsu insisted that the team’s driver decision would be based on outright speed rather than commercial considerations, with Rafael Câmara emerging ahead of Ryo Hirakawa and Leonardo Fornaroli.
The decision means Haas will field a completely Ferrari Academy-developed line-up in 2027, with Rafael Câmara joining Oliver Bearman at the American team. Although Toyota had a strong interest in seeing one of its drivers promoted to Formula 1, Ayao Komatsu made it clear that the partnership could not guarantee a place on the grid.
Haas chooses Rafael Câmara for 2027 Formula 1 season
Haas has decided to return to a youthful approach for the 2027 Formula 1 World Championship, recalling the direction it adopted in 2020 and 2021 when the team selected Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. This time, however, the line-up will combine promising young talent with a driver who already has substantial Formula 1 experience.
Oliver Bearman will enter his third full season as a Formula 1 race driver, while Rafael Câmara will make his debut alongside the British driver. Both have progressed through the Ferrari Driver Academy, creating a line-up with strong connections to the Maranello manufacturer.
The American team focused primarily on lap times when evaluating its options for 2027. Ayao Komatsu could have selected a driver with closer links to Toyota, particularly Ryo Hirakawa, whose promotion was strongly supported by the Japanese manufacturer. Instead, the Haas team principal resisted that pressure and explained that the selection process had been conducted as transparently as possible.
Ayao Komatsu reveals what he told Toyota president Akio Toyoda
Ayao Komatsu explained that he had been aware of Toyota’s ambitions well before Haas finalised its 2027 driver line-up. With the Japanese manufacturer strengthening its involvement in the American Formula 1 team, he wanted to ensure that Toyota president Akio Toyoda fully understood the conditions under which a Toyota-backed driver might receive an opportunity.
“Since 2024, I knew that president Akio Toyoda was very keen to have one of his Toyota drivers racing in 2027. So, before signing Rafael, I went to Tokyo because I didn’t want any misunderstandings, or for him to invest in Haas believing that he could bring in one of his drivers because of our relationship,” Ayao Komatsu explained.
The Haas team principal made it clear that the driver would have to earn the opportunity through performance rather than receive preferential treatment because of Toyota’s financial and technical involvement.
“I told him: ‘I understand your objective, but this driver, whoever he is, has to be the fastest, otherwise he’ll be labelled as a Toyota pay driver.’ And then, as the Haas team, we wouldn’t achieve the result we should achieve because that driver isn’t the fastest.”
For Ayao Komatsu, this distinction was fundamental. Selecting a driver primarily because of commercial connections would not necessarily help Haas maximise its competitive potential, while also exposing the chosen driver to criticism over whether he deserved his place in Formula 1.
Why Toyota accepted the decision to choose Rafael Câmara
Despite Toyota’s interest in placing Ryo Hirakawa on the Formula 1 grid, Ayao Komatsu insisted that Akio Toyoda understood and accepted Haas’ approach to evaluating drivers. The Japanese manufacturer was informed about the team’s intentions for Ryo Hirakawa, who was assessed alongside several other candidates.
“Akio knew from the beginning that we would choose the fastest driver. I was completely transparent, and he was happy with that decision. We informed him of our plans for Ryo, and we evaluated him alongside other drivers. But he didn’t expect Hirakawa to get the seat without earning it either. We assured him that we would choose the driver in the fairest and most professional way possible,” Ayao Komatsu added.
The Haas team principal also considered it essential to discuss the final decision directly with the Toyota president rather than leaving the outcome to be communicated through other channels.
“Then I saw him again after Singapore and told him in person. It was important to look him in the eye.”
The explanation underlines how Haas attempted to balance its growing partnership with Toyota against the team’s responsibility to make independent sporting decisions. Although Ryo Hirakawa was a genuine candidate for the 2027 seat, his connections to the Japanese manufacturer were not enough to secure the position.
Rafael Câmara beats Leonardo Fornaroli and Ryo Hirakawa to Haas seat
Ryo Hirakawa was seriously considered by Haas, but Ayao Komatsu’s evaluations consistently placed him behind Rafael Câmara and Leonardo Fornaroli. The battle for the seat alongside Oliver Bearman therefore effectively became a contest between the Brazilian and the Italian.
Rafael Câmara ultimately secured the opportunity, giving Haas a young driver whose speed had impressed the team during its assessment programme. The decision also reinforces Ferrari’s presence in the American outfit through two drivers who have developed within its junior programme.
For Leonardo Fornaroli, the outcome represents another setback in his attempts to reach Formula 1. Despite winning the Formula 3 championship in 2024 and the Formula 2 title in 2025, the Italian has not secured a full-time seat for the 2027 season.
Leonardo Fornaroli will therefore have to postpone his ambition of making his Formula 1 debut until at least 2028, while Rafael Câmara prepares for his first season alongside Oliver Bearman.
Haas’ decision demonstrates that even with Toyota’s growing involvement in the team, Ayao Komatsu remains determined to select drivers according to their competitive qualities. Rafael Câmara’s promotion reflects that approach, with the Brazilian earning the opportunity ahead of candidates who had both commercial backing and considerable racing experience.
