F1 | Alonso: “No one will want to be close to them and end up in the headlines”
The 2025 Formula 1 season reaches its climax in Abu Dhabi, where the 76th World Championship will be decided this Sunday. Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Oscar Piastri are the three drivers battling for the title, already engaged in psychological games during the press conference, racing with one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the calculator.
Meanwhile, the other 17 drivers will have their own races to run. While they will aim to maximize their points, they are unlikely to take unnecessary risks against those fighting for the championship. Fernando Alonso, reflecting on this dynamic, admits that even if he found himself in the mix near the leaders, he would not engage in reckless battles with drivers competing for the title.
Fernando Alonso’s perspective
“I wouldn’t get in the way. I wouldn’t do it because, in the end, we are racing for our own objectives. Sometimes you fight for P7 or P10, your race isn’t against someone who is winning, and you can’t afford to waste too much time,” Alonso explained, emphasizing the strategic mindset required when racing around championship contenders.
“I don’t think it applies to our situation since we aren’t that close to them, but for teams like Mercedes or Ferrari, it could be a factor. However, I believe no one will want to be near those three cars. Nobody wants to end up in the headlines,” the two-time Formula 1 world champion added, highlighting the cautious approach drivers adopt when racing near title contenders.
With Verstappen able to seal in certain scenarios and McLaren under huge pressure to deliver a clean weekend in Abu Dhabi, the smart money says the pack will give the title contenders all the room they need – exactly as the Asturian predicts.
