Toto Wolff has expressed strong confidence in Kimi Antonelli, emphasizing that the young Italian has the qualities to become a future World Champion. The 2025 season marks Kimi Antonelli’s debut in Formula 1 with Mercedes, and Wolff has highlighted the driver’s skills and potential, revealing when we can expect to witness the full scope of his abilities. Meanwhile, in Mexico, Kimi Antonelli achieved his first race finish ahead of his teammate George Russell.
The middle phase of the calendar, particularly the European rounds, proved challenging for the Bologna-born driver. Kimi Antonelli arrived at circuits where he had previous experience with high expectations, but for several reasons, these races yielded some of his weakest results of the season. Starting from Baku, however, the Italian returned to delivering the encouraging performances that characterized the first part of the year.
The first year of learning
Speaking about Kimi Antonelli, Toto Wolff made it clear that he firmly believes in his driver’s future: “Kimi has a long-term future. I think it is very difficult to enter this generation of cars without having driven them against all the other drivers who are already familiar with ground-effect cars,” stated the Mercedes Team Principal.
Toto Wolff also highlighted how important this season has been for Kimi Antonelli’s learning across all the different aspects of Formula 1: “Next year will be a reset. Now he knows every track, he understands how to handle media pressure, and he knows how to work within the team, so next year we will see the real Kimi.”
Referring to Toto Wolff’s remarks, it is clear that Antonelli has all the attributes to become a World Champion in the future. Speed is not an issue for Kimi, and his innate talent is unquestionable; what remains essential is the accumulation of experience, which will be critical for achieving top results. The challenges and mistakes of his rookie season will serve as valuable lessons for his future development and success in Formula 1.
