F1 | Toto Wolff suggests changes to the F1 calendar and calls for more balance across continents. Toto Wolff believes the current F1 calendar is unbalanced.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal

The Formula 1 calendar has become increasingly focused on the American market, but Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has shared an idea for a more balanced global schedule. Until a few years ago, Formula 1 was primarily centered in Europe. Now, the championship travels across continents — with races in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia. Yet, according to Wolff, the current calendar still lacks proper equilibrium among these regions.

The Austrian team boss suggested that Formula 1 should consider returning to South Korea, which hosted a Grand Prix between 2010 and 2014. Speaking to Reuters, Wolff explained: “It’s a market that has been unexplored for quite some time, even though Formula 1 has grown significantly in recent years, especially among younger fans.”

For Wolff, creating a well-balanced global calendar is essential not only for the sport’s commercial success but also for nurturing young talent. Formula 1 represents the ultimate goal for aspiring racers, and having representation across different countries — both through drivers and events — plays a key role in motivating young drivers who are just starting their careers.

“I think there’s a small gap in East Asia,” Wolff continued, highlighting the importance of giving fans new role models to look up to. “It all starts with karting. People need heroes to inspire them. When we had a big increase in German drivers, it was because kids grew up watching Michael Schumacher. You need that spark.” Currently, Asia is represented on the Formula 1 grid by Alex Albon from Thailand and Yuki Tsunoda from Japan.

The Mercedes event in South Korea

In line with Wolff’s proposal, Mercedes will take part in the Peaches Run Universe 2025 — an automotive and lifestyle event taking place in South Korea. The gathering will be held at the AMG Speedway in Yongin, offering fans an immersive experience centered around motorsport culture and the Mercedes brand.

The event is scheduled for October 12, 2025, and is expected to attract around 30,000 spectators. Attendees will have the chance to watch Valtteri Bottas drive the Mercedes W13 on track, see other iconic Formula 1 cars from the past, and purchase official Mercedes merchandise. The Peaches Run Universe will also feature exhibitions, interactive activities, and celebrations of car culture, further strengthening the brand’s ties with fans in East Asia.

Toto Wolff’s comments underline a growing discussion about how Formula 1 should expand its global footprint. As the sport continues to gain popularity worldwide, finding the right balance between traditional circuits and new markets will be key to sustaining its growth. Bringing back races in regions like South Korea could help Formula 1 tap into emerging fan bases and create new local heroes, ensuring that the next generation of drivers feels inspired to follow in the footsteps of their idols.
