Aston Martin struggles continue as Stroll pokes fun: “What do I save? The livery is nice…”
Lance Stroll commented with sarcasm on Aston Martin’s difficulties, after the team was four seconds off the pace during the Bahrain F1 tests.
Aston Martin in crisis
“We got off on the wrong foot,” admitted Fernando Alonso during the first part of the Bahrain tests. Aston Martin was aware of the challenges of starting a season in Formula 1 without the support of Mercedes, which previously supplied the gearbox and power unit. Honda now powers the car, but, as with almost every F1 partnership, time and experience are needed to fully adapt. It is fair to assume, however, that Silverstone expected a brighter start to the season.
Beyond Alonso’s diplomatic statements meant to keep the team united, frustration is understandable. Missing part of the shakedown and being four seconds off the pace in the first official tests has clearly tested the patience of the team. While Alonso remains measured, the usually quiet Lance Stroll has not held back.
Stroll’s humorous remarks
“What do I save about this Aston Martin? The livery is very nice,” the Canadian joked about the new AMR26.
“Time will tell how much performance we can extract,” he added. “At the moment, we’re trying to improve every day, every lap. It’s a combination of factors.”
As the Bahrain tests conclude, the focus for Stroll and Alonso will shift from witty remarks to the grueling task of data analysis. The AMR26 clearly has potential locked away, but unless the technical team can bridge the massive gap to the frontrunners, the 2026 season could prove to be a very long and difficult campaign for the British outfit.
