It does so by studying the work of other teams in addition to its own. The Bahrain tests are the first opportunity for teams to hit the track alongside their competitors and analyze the technical innovations introduced. This has been a key focus for Pierre Waché, Red Bull’s technical director.
The Bahrain tests have highlighted some difficulties for Red Bull. The Austrian team did not face major setbacks, but the car appeared nervous and, therefore, difficult to drive. This is certainly a concern for the team’s staff, who will need to work on improving the situation.
Beyond addressing their own car’s issues internally, Red Bull has closely analyzed its rivals, particularly the top teams that finished ahead of them in 2024, pushing Christian Horner’s squad down to third place.
Red Bull observes McLaren and Ferrari
The Austrian team’s technical director acknowledged the importance of studying the competition. He began by commenting on the 2024 world champion team: “Some things are interesting, others less so. McLaren is very interesting. After all, they have a lot of flexible wings at the front and rear.”
Pierre Waché then pointed out another aspect of the car that could be a double-edged sword. “Their front suspension is very interesting but also very risky from our perspective. It will be fascinating to see if they can make it work.”
He also commented on the technical details of the Maranello team, which, compared to McLaren, did not show particularly encouraging signs in testing. “Ferrari is also interesting. I think they have tried to fix the issues they had in the past.”
Red Bull’s technical director concluded by looking ahead to the 2025 Formula 1 season, also considering Mercedes as a potential contender. “I think it will be a very tight fight between four teams.”
