F1 | Belgian Grand Prix – Pierre Gasly Delivers Solid Qualifying Performance but Frustration Lingers
At the Belgian Grand Prix, French driver Pierre Gasly responded with determination following his retirement in the Sprint Race, delivering a strong performance in the qualifying session that secured him 13th position on the starting grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix. Despite the solid result, the Alpine Formula 1 driver admitted that some frustration remains after what continues to be a challenging and unpredictable weekend.
A weekend of ups and downs
Pierre Gasly’s Saturday got off to a disastrous start. The French driver was forced to retire even before the start of the Sprint Race due to a hydraulic issue, which rendered his promising eighth-place result in the Sprint Qualifying completely useless. It was a bitter setback for the Alpine F1 Team and a harsh blow for Gasly, who had hoped to capitalise on his strong pace.
However, Pierre Gasly showed resilience and responded in the best possible way during the afternoon’s Grand Prix qualifying session. He delivered a clean and consistent performance that, while not perfect, showed the car had potential. Despite missing out on Q3, his pace was evident.
Gasly’s post-qualifying comments
In interviews following the qualifying session, Pierre Gasly reflected on how slim the margins were in the fight for Q3: “I’m happy with the laps I put together, but on the final attempt I went out a bit too early. Everyone was holding back, trying not to be the first out, and I ended up on track by myself. I had a gap of 50 seconds ahead and that cost us a few tenths—probably the crucial ones that kept us out of Q3.”
The French driver made no excuses, instead praising the efforts of his Alpine mechanics, who managed to get his car back on track in time for the qualifying session after the morning’s mechanical issues. Gasly also reported good sensations behind the wheel, particularly with the car’s balance, which remained unchanged despite the unpredictable weather forecast for Sunday’s race: “I feel good with the current setup. If it rains tomorrow, it’ll be up to me to adapt quickly to the conditions.”
A tough situation for Alpine
Although Pierre Gasly showed his pace and determination, the overall outlook for the Alpine F1 Team remains grim. The French team continues to sit at the bottom of the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship standings, struggling to find consistent performance from its car. To make matters worse, teammate Franco Colapinto will start the race from the pit lane due to technical adjustments, further complicating the team’s strategy for the Belgian Grand Prix.
Pierre Gasly has proven that he can still extract performance from a difficult car, and his commitment was evident throughout the qualifying session. Nevertheless, the challenges facing Alpine this weekend appear to be one step ahead. Even with the unpredictable weather and potential opportunities brought by rain, the road ahead remains steep.
