Max Verstappen’s F1 World Championship dreams suffered a severe blow in Brazil, as a heated team radio exchange with Giampiero Lambiase foreshadowed disaster during qualifying. The Dutch driver was eliminated in Q1 and will start sixteenth — or possibly from the pit lane if Red Bull decides to replace his entire power unit — far from pole-sitter and championship leader Lando Norris.
It was a Saturday to forget for both Red Bull and Verstappen. In a weekend that appears to crown Lando Norris as the clear favorite for the title, thanks to his composed and determined approach fully focused on driving, Verstappen could not find peace. His RB21 struggled through every corner, and the four-time world champion could not get the car to work. Yuki Tsunoda fared even worse, finishing last among the drivers on track at Interlagos.
Verstappen’s problems began during the Sprint Race, where he finished fourth behind George Russell. The reigning world champion struggled to find rhythm, and after the red flag restart, he narrowly avoided being overtaken by Fernando Alonso in a dramatic moment. Moments earlier, a tense team radio exchange with his race engineer had already confirmed the difficulties facing the Milton Keynes team.
Verstappen-Lambiase spat: what they said during the Sprint Race
After the red flag was raised due to a triple incident involving Oscar Piastri, Nico Hulkenberg, and Franco Colapinto, Verstappen spoke over the radio, complaining about a general lack of grip: “The car moves everywhere, in every corner. It’s terrible, I can’t control it.”
Giampiero Lambiase quickly responded: “We will give you instructions to handle Turn 1 better; the conditions there seem critical.” Verstappen, however, did not seem to appreciate the suggestion and pushed back: “No, that won’t help. It’s just wet. I can’t find grip, it’s not about balance.”
The exchange ended with Giampiero Lambiase interrupting to reiterate: “We’ll give you guidance so that you stop experiencing oversteer in that corner every lap. Whether you follow it or not is up to you.” This was a typical spat between Max Verstappen and Giampiero Lambiase, but this time it clearly reflected the visible frustration affecting the entire Red Bull team.
