F1 has found a title contender again: Max Verstappen is back in the game after a spectacular victory in Imola that surprised even the most optimistic observers.
The reigning world champion came out on top in a weekend where McLaren seemed the clear favourite, cutting his gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri down to just 22 points. Still, Verstappen remains grounded and preaches caution, stressing: “There’s still a lot of work to do.”
Imola reopens the fight, but Verstappen warns: “We’re not there yet”
The win in Emilia-Romagna wasn’t enough to make Verstappen declare that “anything is possible.” Despite an updated RB21 that’s more competitive on high-speed tracks, the Dutchman pointed out that the team’s performance still depends heavily on the nature of the circuit:
“Every time we’ve been really competitive, it’s been on tracks with fast corners,” he said, sending a clear message: the F1 title fight is on—but far from decided.
The overtake on Oscar Piastri at the start was the key moment—a flash of brilliance from a true champion—that allowed Max Verstappen to control the race and claim his second win of the season after Japan.
However, with the Monaco GP just around the corner—a circuit that doesn’t suit the characteristics of the 2024 Red Bull—the Dutchman remains cautious: “Monaco could be difficult for us. It’s a slow, technical track, not ideal for our car.”
All eyes are already on Barcelona, where the fast corners could again play to Verstappen’s advantage. The feeling is that if this positive trend continues, Max could truly reignite his title charge. But it will take confirmation. And speed—plenty of speed
