Random inspection on Norris’s McLaren at Monza: focus on the steering wheel area
The car of the British driver was placed under scrutiny following the Monza Grand Prix, where he finished in second place.
Random check
As usual ahead of a new race weekend, the FIA announced which car – among those finishing in the points – underwent a more detailed inspection at the end of the last Grand Prix. This time, the focus was on Lando Norris’s McLaren #4, who finished second at the Italian Grand Prix behind Max Verstappen and ahead of his teammate and championship leader Oscar Piastri. It is important to note that the choice of car for inspection is completely random.
Eyes on the MCL39 steering wheel
The area that drew particular attention from F1 Technical Delegate Jo Bauer was the “steering wheel assembly.” The physical steering wheel was compared with the documentation submitted to the OSC under Article 17.6 of the Technical Regulations (TR) – according to the detailed document released by the FIA. The clutch actuation device was examined and verified under Article 9.3.2 of the TR. The electronic schematics, provided as part of the TD001, were checked against the physical steering wheel. General conformity checks were also conducted in accordance with Articles 8.3 and 8.7 of the TR. All inspected components were found to comply with the 2025 Formula 1 Technical Regulations.
At Monza, Lando Norris recovered three important points on Piastri in the internal McLaren battle for the World Championship. The British driver – aided by a controversial team order that put him ahead of his teammate after an early pit stop and a slow service – still trails the #81 by 31 points in the standings.
