The Formula 1 2026 technical regulations continue to raise serious doubts and generate intense debate, especially following the latest changes announced by the FIA. Since the Barcelona test sessions, drivers have presented a united front, openly voicing strong concerns about the safety aspects of these new-generation cars.
In recent days, however, it has emerged that the reigning world champion was advised by his management not to respond to questions related to this sensitive topic. During a recent interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, the McLaren driver was reportedly interrupted just as journalist Donald McRae began addressing the controversial issue.
Lando Norris has certainly not positioned himself in favor of these new regulations. On the contrary, he has raised numerous doubts and concerns since his very first outing behind the wheel of these cars. According to the British driver, some of the technical solutions introduced have negatively impacted not only the spectacle but also driver safety on track.
The incident that triggered a significant warning sign was the crash involving Franco Colapinto and Oliver Bearman at Suzuka during the Japanese Grand Prix, which highlighted the potential risks associated with the current direction of development.
The situation was reignited by Donald McRae’s account in his article published in The Guardian. Toward the end of the interview with the world champion, the journalist explained how he attempted to address the topic of the 2026 regulations with Norris, only to be immediately stopped by the driver’s management.
According to the report, Norris’ manager was not physically present in the room but was following the interview via phone. When the question about the new regulations was raised, he intervened to make it clear that the topic was off-limits.
“Ten minutes before the end of the interview, I asked a question about the regulations. Norris’ manager was not physically present, but a smartphone had been placed on the table. Suddenly, his voice came through, informing us that questions on this topic were not allowed. It was his only interruption during the interview.”
The restrictions imposed during the interview did not stop at technical matters alone. According to the same report, the journalist had also been asked in advance to avoid questions regarding Norris’ relationship with Max Verstappen, as well as topics involving George Russell.
Concluding his account, McRae explained that despite these limitations, Norris still showed a willingness to respond, at least partially, to the questions posed. However, following his manager’s intervention, he reportedly replied with a slightly embarrassed smile: “I’m not the boss.”
In summary, the apparent “gag order” surrounding Lando Norris’s views on the 2026 F1 regulations highlights the growing tension between the sport’s stars and its governing bodies. While the drivers clearly harbor deep-seated safety concerns following the high-speed incidents at Suzuka, the intervention by McLaren management suggests a strategic move to avoid political friction during a critical phase of the championship. Whether Norris will eventually be allowed to speak his mind remains to be seen, but his “embarrassed smile” speaks volumes about the current climate within the paddock.
