Honda executives have revealed that they encountered some issues with the engine that will be installed on Aston Martin’s 2026 Formula 1 car.
The 2026 season marks the beginning of the collaboration between Aston Martin and Honda, two entities united by a shared ambition: to win in Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport. This relentless pursuit of perfection can often lead to challenges during the design phase, which may have consequences that extend across the entire season.
Such scenarios become even more likely in the context of a regulation change, like the one approaching in the championship. Teams and drivers will need to adapt to cars that are significantly different from what we have seen in recent years, and this could lead to a reshuffling of the grid order.
Early issues emerge for Aston Martin
Among the teams most likely to be a surprise in 2026 is Aston Martin. The Lawrence Stroll-owned team has placed major emphasis on the new technical cycle, hiring a genius like Adrian Newey and securing an agreement with Honda for the supply of power units.
During the presentation of the new engine, however, Honda executives did not hide the fact that they encountered some challenges during the design and development of the power unit that will power the Silverstone-based team’s ‘green car’. Tetsushi Kakuda stated: “The 2026 regulations are technically extremely demanding and perhaps we will face difficulties. At this stage, before any on-track activity, we do not know the gap relative to our rivals, so we will have to wait and see when testing begins. In the long term, of course, our goal is to fight for championships.”
He added: “Electrification is proceeding as expected. However, this is not necessarily the case for the internal combustion engine. Ultimately, a lot depends on the available development time. Considering this, we believe we have done everything possible to the maximum.”
As Aston Martin prepares to enter this new era with Honda, the coming pre-season tests will be crucial in determining how these early technical hurdles will affect the team’s competitiveness on the grid. Fans will be watching closely to see whether the collaboration can translate into a strong start to the 2026 season.
