The captivating tale of Formula 1 icon Ayrton Senna is set to come alive on screens this fall with the Netflix miniseries “Senna.” Premiering on November 29, the six-episode series, featuring Gabriel Leone in the title role, will delve into the remarkable journey of the three-time world champion, highlighting the influential figures from the F1 universe who shaped Senna’s life both on and off the racetrack.
Netflix has unveiled the first images of the actors bringing to life Senna’s family, friends, and rivals. Matt Mella will portray Alain Prost, Senna’s fiercest competitor, while Johannes Heinrichs and Hugo Bonemer will take on the roles of fellow F1 legends Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet, respectively.
As outlined by Netflix, “Senna” will chronicle the driver’s evolution through the world of racing and his personal life, integrating dramatized storytelling reminiscent of acclaimed series like “The Crown” and “Chernobyl.” The narrative begins with Senna’s karting beginnings and follows his journey to England for Formula Ford, culminating in the tragic events of the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
In addition to Leone, the cast includes Alice Wegmann as Ayrton Senna’s wife, Lilian de Vasconcellos, and Camila Márdila as his sister, Viviane. Arnaud Viard will depict former FIA president Jean-Marie Balestre, while Patrick Kennedy and Steven Mackintosh will portray McLaren’s Ron Dennis and Williams’ Frank Williams, respectively.
Leone, who coincidentally played another F1 driver in Netflix’s “Ferrari” earlier this year, shared that filming took place across Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Ireland. “I’m exhausted, but overwhelmingly happy,” he told W Magazine during the production’s wrap at the end of 2023.
The cast also includes Gabriel Louchard as Brazilian commentator Galvão Bueno, Julia Foti as Senna’s partner Adriane Galisteu, and Susana Ribeiro and Marco Ricca as his parents. Other notable roles feature João Maestri as Rubens Barrichello, Pâmela Tomé as TV host Xuxa Meneghel, Lucca Messer as Roland Ratzenberger, and Kaya Scodelario as a fictional journalist.
