Fernando Alonso continues to make headlines and, as always, does not shy away from being direct about his future. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper AS, the two-time world champion revealed his long-term plans in Formula 1, linking his continued presence in the sport to Aston Martin’s performance under the new 2026 regulations.
The Spanish driver wants to finish his career on a high note
Alonso explained his position clearly:
“If in 2026 we are competitive and I am able to consistently fight for the top positions, that will be my final year in Formula 1. I want to finish on a high note, with a winning project. But if that is not the case, I will continue until the end of 2027. I do not like the idea of leaving with a bitter aftertaste.”
Fernando Alonso: “I don’t race just to take part”
Fernando Alonso, who recently turned 44, remains one of the most iconic and respected figures in the F1 paddock. His desire to compete shows no signs of slowing down, but he is aware that the new technical era of Formula 1 could represent the last opportunity to add a memorable chapter to his illustrious career.
“I have always said that I don’t want to race just to take part. I want to do it to win, or at least to be a protagonist. If Aston Martin can give me that opportunity, it will be the perfect moment to say goodbye. Otherwise, I will push on for a couple more seasons.”
Lawrence Stroll’s team is investing heavily in preparation for 2026, when new power units and a completely revised technical regulation will come into effect. The arrival of figures like Adrian Newey, combined with the strengthening of the technical department, fuels hope that the British team can finally take a significant step forward in competitiveness.
