Toward the end of the post-race press conference, the Red Bull driver took a not-so-subtle jab at the British journalists: “Quick question! I don’t see the British press. Did they have to run to the airport? Or did they not know where the press conference was?”
Max Verstappen vs. Everyone
Responding to the three-time world champion, soon to clinch his fourth title, David Croft, the longstanding voice of Formula 1 in the UK, commented, “Sometimes a story isn’t just an opportunity to make noise or to attack people for the perception of British bias.”
“As for me, since it’s a press conference limited to media only, I never attend the post-race press conference, regardless of who won. Thursday’s press conferences are different. They’re for both broadcast and print media, just to help people understand. And the statements are freely available to all media, so other journalists might be out gathering other stories at that time, knowing they won’t miss anything said in the FIA post-race press conference.”
The cold war between the Max Verstappen family and the British press has especially intensified after the controversial events in Austin and Mexico City, where Damon Hill and Johnny Herbert harshly criticized the conduct of the number 1, angering his father, Jos.
After Max Verstappen’s extraordinary show of strength in Brazil, however, the situation seems to be under control—for now.
