Anything can happen in Formula 1 in 2026, but Damon Hill is clear on one thing: Adrian Newey and his Aston Martin will be the season’s real surprise.
The Aston Martin designed by Adrian Newey is expected to be the standout team of the 2026 F1 season, according to Damon Hill. With less than two weeks to go before the Barcelona pre-season tests, the Silverstone-based squad is increasingly being seen as one of the main contenders for the upcoming World Championship. Fernando Alonso is hoping to clinch a third world title to cap off his long career in F1, but paddock rumors suggest the season could hold unexpected twists.
While Red Bull unveiled its 2026 livery in Detroit, questions remain about which team will emerge as the real favorite. Accurate analysis is impossible before the Barcelona tests, but some signs are emerging. Confidence is high regarding Mercedes’ power unit, for example, which was developed before speculation about its compression ratio. Similarly, Ferrari appears to be focusing heavily on the “base” of the SF-26, aiming for a solid foundation even if it means slight delays in development.
Meanwhile, interest is growing in the work Adrian Newey has been doing at Aston Martin. Despite some concerns regarding the Honda engine and the weight of the new Silverstone car, more and more insiders are listing Aston Martin among the potential front-runners for 2026.
Hill: “I expect surprises in 2026”
“There could be surprises in 2026,” Damon Hill explained during the TalkSPORT podcast. “It’s a bit like when Jenson Button won the championship with Brawn GP: they shocked everyone by interpreting the regulations in a completely different way. And we all know that the master of grey areas is Adrian Newey, who is now at Aston Martin.”
“He’s moved on from Red Bull and Max Verstappen, of course, but now he has found a new home at Aston Martin. He’s been working on this project for 18 months, and everyone expects that he could add that special touch to the car. I’m convinced it could happen,” the 1996 world champion concluded.
Damon Hill’s comparison to the legendary Brawn GP season highlights the unique opportunity that the 2026 regulatory reset provides for a technical mastermind like Adrian Newey. While Aston Martin faces significant hurdles—specifically the integration of a new Honda works partnership and the struggle to meet the FIA’s aggressive 768kg minimum weight target—Hill’s confidence rests on Newey’s proven ability to out-engineer the competition during a “clean sheet” transition. As the paddock prepares for the Barcelona tests, the tension between Aston Martin’s reported technical struggles and Newey’s reputation for finding “magic” in the gray areas of the rulebook will be one of the defining storylines of the new era.
