Kimi Antonelli takes historic first pole position in China
A chaotic qualifying session in China, particularly during Q3, delivered the first pole position of Kimi Antonelli’s Formula 1 career. The young Italian driver also became the youngest pole-sitter in the history of Formula 1, breaking the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel.
The first reliability issue of the weekend for Mercedes occurred in the garage of George Russell. During the first run of Q3, the W17 suffered a gearbox problem that prevented the British driver from completing his first flying lap. The issue effectively opened the door for Kimi Antonelli, who capitalized on the opportunity to secure the top spot on the grid.
Kimi Antonelli commented on the qualifying session with these words:
“It was quite a clean session, so I’m really very happy. Obviously I know that George had a problem in Q3; it would have been nice to see him also with two sets of tyres, but I think it was a very good session, clean, without mistakes. I can’t wait to start the race tomorrow.”
The calm behind Kimi Antonelli’s first pole position
Knowing that your main rival is temporarily out of contention can sometimes reduce the pressure, but it can also increase the tension. Kimi Antonelli managed to stay composed, and that calm approach ultimately allowed him to secure the pole position.
“I knew that he had a problem, I saw it, but I tried to stay calm to put together a good lap, and in the end I managed to do it.”
Tomorrow’s race will not be simple for the Italian driver, who will have to defend his position against George Russell, who has appeared to be in very strong form throughout the weekend. Kimi Antonelli will also need to improve his starts: both in Australia and in the Sprint race he did not produce particularly strong launches off the line.
By contrast, the Ferrari duo showed not only excellent reactions at the start but also very competitive race pace, something that could complicate Mercedes’ plans during the Grand Prix.
The performance advantage of the two Silver Arrows over the rest of the grid currently appears rather clear, but the Formula 1 season we are witnessing continues to show signs of being highly unpredictable.
