Cadillac’s dream of competing in a Formula 1 Grand Prix finally became a reality at the Australian GP, marking the American team’s first-ever appearance in Melbourne. The weekend proved challenging for the new squad, which brought the total number of teams on the grid back to eleven. Both drivers were eliminated in Q1 and ultimately did not reach the top 15 in the race.
Perez closest to points in debut
Sergio Perez came closest to a notable finish, ending the race in 16th place. Reflecting on his first outing as a full-time driver for the team, he said: “Our first race as a team is over. Completing it is incredible and a true milestone, especially just one year after our entry was confirmed. Now that this is behind us, we need to focus on performance to deliver our best. We feel competitive within the team, and that’s the mindset we will need going forward to close the gap and aim for something big.”
Bottas faces technical setback
Valtteri Bottas, however, had a less fortunate debut. The Finnish driver was forced to retire on lap 15 due to a technical issue, ending his race prematurely. “Today we made history as a team. It’s our first Grand Prix weekend ever, and we’re here, racing, which is a proud moment for everyone,” Bottas explained. “It’s a shame my race ended early due to a fuel system problem, but we’ve learned a lot. The team did an excellent job finishing the race with Checo’s car. There are still many positives to take away from this weekend, and it’s only the beginning of this journey together. I had fun and I’m looking forward to going to China and trying again.”
Cadillac’s debut illustrates the challenges new teams face in F1, but also highlights the potential for growth. With lessons learned in Australia, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas will be aiming to build momentum in the next rounds of the 2026 season.
As Cadillac prepares for the second round of the 2026 championship in Shanghai, the focus will undoubtedly shift toward reliability and unlocking the aerodynamic potential of their new challenger.
