The atmosphere around Oscar Piastri is growing tense. The Australian driver is going through a complex period after having managed the championship operations with relative calm. Recent weekends, marked by disappointing results and rising tensions within McLaren, have fueled doubts and rumors of fractures that may be difficult to mend.
Ralf Schumacher on Piastri’s situation
Ralf Schumacher addressed the (alleged) rift during the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, as reported by GpBlog, suggesting that Oscar Piastri’s relationship with Woking may have reached a critical point. “From my point of view, if a driver has lost trust in the team – or vice versa, as can happen – it’s a clear sign that there should be consequences. Sometimes the most logical solution is to part ways,” explained the former German driver.
According to Ralf Schumacher, if Piastri no longer identifies with the McLaren project, a future at Aston Martin should not be ruled out. “The rumors in the paddock are clear: Aston Martin is looking for a major change for 2026, or at the latest shortly afterward. I get the impression that Oscar Piastri is asking himself whether it’s worth continuing to endure this situation, especially with all the criticism and controversies surrounding him.”
Oscar Piastri and the Aston Martin temptation
Schumacher suggested that Piastri is already on Aston Martin’s list of potential drivers. “They are looking for two strong drivers. One of the candidates is Oscar Piastri. And I can say with good confidence that there are already contacts. Charles Leclerc also represents a concrete option if he decides to take on the challenge. It’s not impossible that the Silverstone team could try to anticipate a contractual resolution if they find a valid alternative for the next season.”
The idea of a Piastri-Stroll or Oscar Piastri-Alonso pairing is not far-fetched (the Charles Leclerc option seems less likely for now, more of a speculation). Aston Martin, having built a new headquarters and strengthened its technical structure with key hires, appears ready to take another step to secure a line-up capable of matching the ambitions tied to the Honda power unit.
Montoya denies sabotage rumors
Piastri’s second half of the season has raised eyebrows. After winning at Zandvoort with Norris sidelined by a technical problem, the championship seemed set. However, a sudden drop in performance – compounded by Lando Norris’s resurgence, in excellent form from Monza to his Mexico City victory – flipped the situation.
Such a sharp trend led some to speculate about an internal “sabotage” against the Australian, a hypothesis that former driver Juan Pablo Montoya quickly dismissed: “I don’t believe there is any intention to harm Oscar Piastri,” he stated. “It’s normal that, in a tight battle like this, the team unconsciously favors whoever is in confidence or scoring more points. But talking about sabotage is an exaggeration.”
Oscar Piastri: technical issues or trust issues?
The truth likely lies somewhere in between. Oscar Piastri has shown some uncertainty in recent races, particularly in qualifying, where the feeling with the rear of the MCL39 seems to have disappeared. Meanwhile, Norris has found remarkable consistency, becoming the technical and psychological reference point for the team.
In this context, it seems that cracks may have also appeared on a human level. Mutual trust – an essential ingredient in the driver-team relationship – appears diminished. The Australian’s future therefore remains one of the hottest topics in the paddock. If the Aston Martin option were to materialize, it could trigger a market domino effect with unpredictable consequences across the grid. One thing is certain: in Formula 1, trust is everything. And when it breaks, even a contract is not enough to hold it together.
