Red Bull’s Gamble
The biggest decision Christian Horner has made in his twenty years at Red Bull was to launch the in-house powertrain project for the new regulatory cycle starting in 2026.
The engine department was established at the Milton Keynes headquarters and is benefiting from the arrival of numerous specialist engineers recruited from rival teams.
Christian Horner’s Cautious Approach
In a recent interview with Germany’s Sport Bild, Christian Horner took a notably cautious stance regarding expectations for the Red Bull-built power unit: “It would be arrogant of us to think we can immediately outperform our rivals. Ferrari has been in this field for 75 years, Mercedes for 25. And both Audi and Honda have built some of the best engines in motorsport across different categories. First, we need to earn everyone’s respect. Next year will be a fresh start.” – he pointed out.
Marko Raises Eyebrows
At the Austrian Grand Prix, Helmut Marko expressed some surprise at Christian Horner’s comments: “I was surprised when I read what he said. Internally, he speaks differently. We are on schedule with our engine and currently believe we don’t have a major disadvantage. All manufacturers have to build completely new power units for next year. We have experienced people with us, most of whom were hired from well-established companies. Let’s hope no engine manufacturer dominates the way Mercedes did in 2014,” he told Oe24.
