F1 | 2025 title fight: Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris battle like Max Verstappen vs Lewis Hamilton in 2021. David Coulthard believes the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship fight is still open.

According to David Coulthard, the fight for the Formula 1 World Championship is far from over. Despite the current points lead, the former F1 driver believes that Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris should not underestimate Max Verstappen.

Oscar Piastri is currently leading the Formula 1 World Championship standings with an 8-point advantage over his McLaren teammate Lando Norris, and a significant 69-point lead ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen. After twelve races into the 2025 season, the championship battle appears to be an internal contest between the McLaren teammates. However, David Coulthard, the ex-Formula 1 driver and commentator, thinks otherwise. Although the season has reached its midpoint and Piastri’s lead over the four-time World Champion Verstappen is considerable, David Coulthard believes there is still potential for the championship dynamics to change significantly.

Can Max Verstappen Still Compete for the Title?

In an interview given to the official Formula 1 website, David Coulthard explained that Max Verstappen remains a serious contender who could still challenge the McLaren duo, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, for the World Championship title. Coulthard stated: “You cannot count Max [Verstappen] out. For the championship, we all know that an upgrade will be needed to unlock performance. Considering where Red Bull is currently, and if they are struggling, it is hard to imagine that the second half of the season’s circuits will suit Red Bull better than the first half. Red Bull will need an upgrade to give Verstappen consistency. Are they capable of doing it? Absolutely. Have they done it before? Yes. Is Max exceptional? Absolutely.”

Will the Championship Battle Resemble 2021?

Race after race, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris continue to ignite the battle for the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship. According to David Coulthard, the possibility of seeing a duel reminiscent of the intense Verstappen versus Lewis Hamilton championship fight in 2021 is not far-fetched. Coulthard remarked: “It’s a bit like 2021, where some people are still talking about what happened – only one driver can win. Both Max [Verstappen] and Lewis [Hamilton] drove like world champions that year, but only one could take the title. This could also be their only chance to win a World Championship title; we don’t know what will happen in 2026, we don’t know what the future holds, so you have to seize the moment.”

Coulthard added: “That’s why I’m very impressed with how Oscar [Piastri] has stepped up this year. But Lando’s [Norris] response in the last two races has also shown his quality. I think it’s one of those situations where both deserve it, but only one can claim it.”
