Formula 1 driver market already heating up ahead of 2027 season
Between major regulation changes, mid-season developments and long breaks in the calendar, another important topic is quietly gaining momentum in the Formula 1 paddock: the increasingly active driver market ahead of the 2027 season.
At the end of the current campaign, as many as 14 driver contracts are set to expire, including those of major names such as Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. The list also includes young talents Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar, although considering their performances so far, it seems reasonable to expect both drivers to earn contract renewals rather than face uncertainty over their futures.
The situation appears far more complicated in the midfield, where entire driver line-ups currently lack guarantees for next season. Williams, Aston Martin, Racing Bulls, Audi and Haas could all face significant decisions in the coming months as Formula 1 teams begin shaping their long-term projects.
Adding even more unpredictability to the situation is the possibility of sudden surprises within the driver market. One scenario frequently discussed inside the paddock is the potential early departure of Max Verstappen, which would completely shake up the grid in a similar way to Lewis Hamilton’s blockbuster Ferrari move in 2024.
Esteban Ocon reportedly under pressure at Haas
According to reports from Brazilian journalist Julianne Cerasoli, the most vulnerable position at the moment could belong to Esteban Ocon.
The French driver is reportedly at risk of not even completing the season as a full-time Haas driver, with senior figures inside the American team allegedly dissatisfied by the performance gap to rookie teammate Oliver Bearman.
At present, Oliver Bearman reportedly holds a 16-point advantage over Ocon, further increasing internal pressure on the experienced Frenchman during what is proving to be a highly competitive Formula 1 season.
The report also claims that Ocon was involved in a heated discussion with Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu following the Miami Grand Prix, where the French driver finished only 13th.
For Esteban Ocon, an early departure during the season would not be an entirely new experience. Back in 2024, the Frenchman also failed to complete the campaign with Alpine, leaving before the final round in order to participate in the post-season Abu Dhabi tests with what would later become his current team, Haas.
At this stage, however, no official confirmation has arrived from Haas regarding the rumours, and the Formula 1 driver market remains highly fluid as teams continue evaluating their options for the future.
With the 2027 driver market expected to become one of the busiest in recent years, every performance and every internal development could play a decisive role in shaping the next generation of Formula 1 line-ups.
