Esteban Ocon may be a Formula 1 “free agent” without a contract in place for 2027, but the Frenchman is determined to prove that he still belongs at the highest level. After securing his best result of the 2026 season with Haas at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon issued a forceful reminder of his motorsport record and declared that, given the right car, he can fight with Formula 1’s best drivers.
Eighth place in Baku represented a welcome result after a difficult period. Circumstances certainly played a role, with both Alpine cars retiring after the incident triggered by Franco Colapinto, Lando Norris also being eliminated after contact involving the French cars, and Liam Lawson becoming an innocent victim when Arvid Lindblad hit him.
Esteban Ocon takes advantage of chaotic Baku race
It was a fortunate sequence of events for Haas, but opportunities in Formula 1 still have to be seized. Esteban Ocon did exactly that, maximising the circumstances to score his strongest finish of the season.
After the race, the French driver made clear that he felt he deserved the result, while also reflecting on the difficult period he has endured and reminding the paddock of what he has achieved throughout his career.
“I can say that I deserve this. Not all the rest of this shitty period,” the Haas driver said. “I’ve raced against everyone who is out there, you know? And I’ve always been on the same level as them.”
Esteban Ocon then pointed to his career record as evidence that he remains capable of competing at the highest level.
“I’ve won every championship I’ve competed in. I’ve won races in Formula Renault, I’ve won championships in karting, I won European Formula 3, I won GP3, I was in the top ten in DTM for half a season, I’ve won in Formula 1. I can do it, you know?”
He followed that assessment with an even more emphatic statement: “I’m one of the best out there and I’m not afraid to say it.”
Ocon narrowly loses seventh place to Arvid Lindblad
The final classification did little to diminish Esteban Ocon’s satisfaction, even though Arvid Lindblad snatched seventh place from him almost on the finish line.
Only three hundredths of a second separated the pair as Esteban Ocon had to settle for eighth.
“I’m really, really happy with the result,” he said after narrowly losing seventh position to Arvid Lindblad. “When the car works, this is the result we deserve.”
For Esteban Ocon, the result was also confirmation that Haas had executed the Azerbaijan Grand Prix well from an operational perspective. The car had been competitive from the beginning of the weekend, while the team made the right strategic calls around the pit stops and Safety Car periods.
“We had a competitive car from the start of the weekend, we made all the right decisions with the pit stops and during the Safety Car. I made the same overtake I did at Zandvoort, just before the finish line, so that was really positive as well. And once again, I gained two positions at Turn 2.”
Esteban Ocon takes confidence into F1 triple-header
The Baku performance arrives at an important moment for Esteban Ocon. With no contract secured for 2027, every strong weekend provides another opportunity to demonstrate his value as the Formula 1 driver market develops.
The Frenchman believes the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has given both himself and Haas positive momentum heading into the upcoming triple-header.
“So yes, it was a really great race, I’m very happy with the result. I think it gives everyone a positive feeling and allows us to go into the triple-header with confidence,” Esteban Ocon concluded.
