Esteban Ocon’s dispute with Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu reportedly escalated during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, with German newspaper BILD alleging that the French driver grabbed his team boss by the shoulder during a confrontation. The reported incident has raised further questions about the 30-year-old’s future with the Formula 1 team, although Esteban Ocon has denied allegations of physical violence.
According to BILD, tensions between Esteban Ocon and Ayao Komatsu reached their lowest point on Saturday morning in Mexico City, following a series of disagreements that began after Haas announced Rafael Câmara as the Frenchman’s replacement for the 2027 Formula 1 season.
Esteban Ocon and Ayao Komatsu dispute reportedly escalated in Mexico
The relationship between Esteban Ocon and the Haas team principal has reportedly deteriorated since the announcement that Rafael Câmara would take over the French driver’s seat in 2027. Matters allegedly came to a head during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, when a heated argument resulted in Esteban Ocon being excluded from the race on disciplinary grounds.
The 30-year-old did not participate in the Grand Prix, with Haas instead calling upon Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa to replace him.
Rumours subsequently emerged suggesting that the confrontation between Esteban Ocon and Ayao Komatsu had escalated into physical violence. However, the French driver was among the first to reject those allegations.
Esteban Ocon acknowledged that a disagreement had taken place with the Haas team principal but stated that he “strongly condemns violence in all its forms”. His denial, however, appears to conflict with the account subsequently published by BILD, which alleged that physical contact had occurred during their confrontation.
BILD reveals alleged incident involving Esteban Ocon and Haas boss
According to the German newspaper, Esteban Ocon went to Ayao Komatsu’s office on Saturday morning to apologise following a heated discussion between the two on Friday. The Japanese team principal reportedly responded that he no longer wanted to speak to the driver.
Esteban Ocon allegedly continued to insist on having a conversation, eventually threatening to remain in the office until Ayao Komatsu agreed to discuss the situation with him.
The Haas team principal reportedly refused to engage with the French driver. However, when Ayao Komatsu attempted to leave the office, Esteban Ocon allegedly grabbed him by the shoulder to stop him from leaving.
That account remains an allegation reported by BILD and is disputed by Esteban Ocon, who has denied that physical violence occurred.
Esteban Ocon could face immediate Haas contract termination
The alleged incident, combined with the increasingly tense atmosphere within Haas, could now lead to the immediate termination of Esteban Ocon’s contract.
Although the French driver was already set to leave the team at the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season, the latest developments have raised the possibility of his departure being brought forward.
Further developments and potential announcements concerning Esteban Ocon’s future could emerge during the week, as uncertainty continues to surround his position within the American team.
