David Coulthard believes that Kimi Antonelli’s current fresh and sincere attitude towards the media will inevitably change as his Formula 1 career develops over the coming years. The young Italian has started his second season in the championship in excellent form, securing the first two victories of his career thanks also to a highly competitive Mercedes package, and becoming the youngest driver to lead the world championship standings.
The Bologna-born driver has also won over fans thanks to his honest and straightforward interviews, but Coulthard argued that this will inevitably change quite soon.
“Well, believe me, things will change as he grows up,” David Coulthard said on the Up To Speed podcast. “He will go from being ‘excited about the novelty’ and being invited courtside at basketball games, to finding himself in a point where it will suddenly start to become a bit tiring because people will always want something more from him.”
“Let’s draw a line. Look at that joyful smile. Fast forward: maybe not this year, but certainly over the course of his career, he will end up feeling a bit worn down by the battles. We don’t want him to lose that enthusiasm right now.”
Beyond his media commitments, the former driver also questioned how the 19-year-old will cope with the physical and mental demands of fighting for a championship across a long Formula 1 season.
“The other key question is whether he will have the necessary pace for a Formula 1 season, because it is exhausting and I think that is what we saw with Oscar Piastri last year,” he added. “He arrived in Baku, he had to win that race and he made a series of mistakes, and that is where Lando, with more experience, was able to prevail.”
In summary, David Coulthard’s perspective highlights the initial “honeymoon phase” for any young superstar is fleeting. While Andrea Kimi Antonelli is currently the golden boy of the paddock, the relentless cycle of marketing events, media scrutiny, and the psychological weight of a title fight against a seasoned teammate like George Russell will be the ultimate test of his maturity. Antonelli has the raw speed to lead the 2026 championship, but as Coulthard points out, maintaining that joy while navigating the “war of attrition” that is a modern F1 season is a challenge that breaks even the most talented drivers. For the Tifosi and Mercedes fans, the hope is that Kimi can preserve his authentic spirit even as the business of winning starts to take its toll.
