David Coulthard believes George Russell’s 2026 Formula 1 campaign has become a major test of character after an apparently endless run of misfortune. Although the former Formula 1 driver still considers a championship comeback possible, he admits the Mercedes driver has absorbed so many setbacks that even a Rocky film would struggle to make the story believable.
George Russell entered the season as one of the leading title contenders, but his momentum has repeatedly been interrupted while Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli has driven with confidence and established himself at the top of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.
David Coulthard stunned by George Russell’s bad luck
Discussing George Russell’s difficult first half of the season, David Coulthard questioned how much more misfortune one driver could reasonably endure.
“It has been a disaster,” David Coulthard said. “How much bad luck can one person have? On the one hand, that bad luck is something the team has to overcome. On the other, George is no longer riding a wave of momentum.
“George is at that stage of the season where Kimi is driving instinctively and, apart from Barcelona, has enjoyed fairly good reliability, while George has taken the punches and is also a little more experienced.”
The contrasting fortunes of Mercedes’ two drivers have added pressure to George Russell’s title campaign. Kimi Antonelli has been able to build confidence through strong results, while George Russell has repeatedly been forced to recover from setbacks rather than develop the same positive momentum.
The situation has also intensified debate over whether George Russell risks being pushed into a supporting role at Mercedes if Kimi Antonelli continues to lead the championship.
Kimi Antonelli’s youth may offer an advantage
David Coulthard believes experience remains valuable in Formula 1, but he also highlighted how youth can sometimes protect a driver from overthinking the difficulties surrounding a championship campaign.
“Experience is a positive thing, but the advantage of youth is that you do not know what you do not know,” David Coulthard explained. “The downside of experience is that you understand the challenges, the difficulties, the momentum and all those positive things.”
Kimi Antonelli is currently able to approach the Mercedes title fight more instinctively, according to David Coulthard, while George Russell has a clearer understanding of how quickly a championship opportunity can disappear.
Other former drivers have also questioned the effect of that pressure, with Johnny Herbert suggesting that Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen are wearing George Russell down during the 2026 campaign.
Max Verstappen comeback gives George Russell hope
Despite the scale of the challenge, David Coulthard has not ruled out a George Russell recovery. He pointed to Max Verstappen’s previous championship comeback as proof that a significant points deficit can still be overturned.
“As we know from Max Verstappen last year, it is still possible to recover from that kind of points deficit,” David Coulthard said.
However, the former McLaren and Red Bull driver acknowledged that George Russell’s path back into contention would require an extraordinary change in fortune during the second half of the season.
“But listen, not even Sylvester Stallone would write a Rocky film with that kind of comeback after all the punches he has taken,” David Coulthard concluded. “So for George, it is going to be a character-building year.”
George Russell’s speed has never been in question, but the remainder of the season will test his ability to respond mentally and competitively to repeated disappointment. Recovering his momentum will be essential if he is to place sustained pressure on Kimi Antonelli and restore his championship challenge.
