Johnny Herbert believes Kimi Antonelli’s consistency and the continuing speculation surrounding Max Verstappen are placing George Russell under intense psychological pressure at Mercedes. After beginning 2026 as one of the favourites for the Formula 1 title, George Russell now trails his teammate by 59 points and has been outscored six victories to two.
The British driver could hardly have imagined such a difficult sporting scenario at the start of the season. George Russell entered Formula 1’s new regulatory era with a realistic opportunity to fight for his first world championship, but he now finds himself chasing a 19-year-old teammate who has established a commanding lead in the 2026 Formula 1 driver standings.
Johnny Herbert says Kimi Antonelli’s consistency is hurting George Russell
Kimi Antonelli has repeatedly delivered strong results even when Mercedes has not enjoyed a perfect weekend. According to Johnny Herbert, that consistency is becoming increasingly difficult for George Russell to process.
“I think the consistency that Kimi Antonelli is able to achieve is definitely eating away at George Russell,” Johnny Herbert told CasinoStugan. “It seems that every time George Russell gets into the car, he takes a bit of a battering.
“I know it has not been a perfect season for him. I know that perhaps the luck has not gone his way, which is part of the game. It will be eating away at him because everyone, including me, was saying that this year would be George Russell’s year. But it has not turned out that way.”
Reliability problems and difficult circumstances have contributed to George Russell’s deficit, but Kimi Antonelli has generally been better able to turn challenging weekends into valuable points. Emerson Fittipaldi has nevertheless argued that George Russell can still challenge Kimi Antonelli during the second half of the championship.
Max Verstappen rumours add to the pressure at Mercedes
Johnny Herbert believes the situation is being made more difficult by recurring rumours connecting Max Verstappen with Mercedes. Although no move has been confirmed, speculation over the four-time world champion’s future has repeatedly placed George Russell’s position under scrutiny.
“Then there are the Max Verstappen rumours, which certainly do not help his state of mind,” Johnny Herbert continued. “He will be well aware that it is his seat that is at risk, given that he has only a one-year contract.”
For any Formula 1 driver, certainty over the future can make it easier to concentrate entirely on performance. Johnny Herbert suggested that George Russell may not have enjoyed the level of security he would ideally want while attempting to recover ground in the championship.
“Stability and security are always what a driver wants,” Johnny Herbert added. “In this case, they probably have not been entirely present. But that is the challenge you have to face.”
George Russell must become Mercedes’ dominant force
Johnny Herbert believes the only effective response is for George Russell to establish himself as the clearly dominant driver within Mercedes. Strong performances would both reduce the championship deficit and weaken speculation over his future.
“Sometimes you find yourself constantly having to prove your worth, and I think George Russell is in exactly that situation,” Johnny Herbert explained. “He is always out on track, having to prove his value.
“The only way to silence those rumours or secure the signature on the contract is to become the dominant force within the team. Unfortunately, that is not really the case at the moment.”
The pressure is particularly significant because George Russell entered the season as Mercedes’ experienced leader. Instead, Kimi Antonelli has developed into the team’s principal championship contender, creating the risk that George Russell could gradually be pushed into a supporting position similar to the scenario examined in the comparison with Mercedes’ former number-two driver Valtteri Bottas.
Kimi Antonelli’s confidence is becoming increasingly visible
Johnny Herbert also highlighted the visible confidence Kimi Antonelli has gained from his performances. The Italian driver appears increasingly comfortable with his position at the top of the championship and with the responsibility of leading Mercedes’ title challenge.
“When you look at Kimi Antonelli’s face now, you notice that kind of inner confidence beginning to shine through, and everyone can see and feel it,” Johnny Herbert said.
“It is probably quite demoralising for George Russell to realise that, even when he thinks he has completed an excellent lap, the little screen on his dashboard shows him that he has still not managed to close the gap.”
George Russell therefore faces a crucial second half of the season. He must overcome a 59-point deficit, improve his results against Kimi Antonelli and prevent uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen from becoming an additional distraction.
The championship is not yet over, but the balance within Mercedes has shifted considerably. George Russell began 2026 expecting to lead the team’s title bid. He will return from the summer break needing to prove that he can regain that position from a teammate whose consistency and growing confidence have transformed the competitive dynamic inside the team.
