One team, one rivalry
After winning the opening race of the season in Australia, George Russell struggled to replicate his performance in China and Japan, where his Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli came out on top. These two victories have allowed the young Italian driver to take the lead in the championship standings, but at the same time, they risk sparking an internal rivalry at Brackley between the Bolognese rookie and the British driver.
Declare war immediately?
On this topic, former McLaren driver David Coulthard shared his opinion on the Up to Speed podcast, advising what Russell should do next: “If I were him, I’d declare war on Antonelli this very instant,” he explained after the Japanese Grand Prix weekend – “Stop trying to be the nice guy. We said it after Kimi’s first victory. I watched a great interview with Toto Wolff and George discussing the race in Japan. I thought it was fantastic that Mercedes shared that message on social media. It gives us an idea that Toto is there at a certain moment to support George. But on the other side of the garage, he’s praising Antonelli: ‘You did it, I always believed in you.’”
The challenge of keeping up
Additionally, Coulthard shared his thoughts on Antonelli, particularly on whether the young driver can maintain the pace he showed in the last two races for the rest of the season: “It can be very demanding. We saw it last year with Oscar Piastri; he arrived in Baku for a race he was expected to win, but he made a series of mistakes. As a result, Lando Norris, with his greater experience, was able to make the difference.”
In the high-pressure world of 2026 Formula 1, internal team dynamics often determine the outcome of the title race as much as aerodynamic updates do. If George Russell takes David Coulthard’s advice to heart, we could be looking at one of the most explosive teammate battles in recent Mercedes history, reminiscent of the legendary Hamilton-Rosberg era. The coming races in Miami and Europe will be the ultimate litmus test for this intra-team power struggle.
