Daniel Ricciardo, another farewell
Formula 1 will return to the track without Daniel Ricciardo, who was dropped by Red Bull due to underwhelming performances. The Australian, often outperformed by his teammate Yuki Tsunoda, will give up his seat to Liam Lawson starting from the United States Grand Prix at the 5.513-kilometre Circuit of The Americas in Austin on Sunday, October 20, and he gave the 2002-born driver a heartfelt and unexpected “good luck.”
The behind-the-scenes moment was revealed by journalist Tom Clarkson in the latest episode of F1 Nation: “Daniel knew that Singapore was his last race. Yet after the GP, he went up to Lawson and said, ‘Good luck. You only get one chance in Formula 1, make the most of it.’ Hearing things like that almost brings you to tears.” – he explained.
Daniel Ricciardo, under scrutiny all year (Helmut Marko even wanted to drop him before the Spanish GP in mid-June), did not hide his sadness in Singapore. In every interview, the Honey Badger seemed downcast and resigned to his departure. A departure that perhaps he unconsciously sought himself: his goal was to return to Red Bull, and the opportunity nearly came in the summer when the Milton Keynes team was on the verge of firing Sergio Perez.
Checo’s continued stay at Red Bull was the final blow for Daniel Ricciardo, who then faced the failure of his project, which began in mid-2023. The #3 has always rejected offers from smaller teams, but made an exception for Red Bull, hoping to drive for the main team in 2024 or at the latest by 2025.
