Racing Bulls has emerged as the leading midfield team of the 2026 Formula 1 season, turning an initially questioned VCARB03 concept into fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship. Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad have combined consistent points finishes with an aggressive development programme, giving the Faenza team a five-point advantage over Alpine at the summer break.
The start of Racing Bulls’ 2026 campaign was particularly intriguing. Alongside Red Bull, it is the only other team using the first Formula 1 power unit developed by Red Bull Powertrains in Milton Keynes. Yet when the VCARB03 appeared at Barcelona during pre-season running, it displayed characteristics that were noticeably different from those of its senior-team counterpart.
Racing Bulls proves its VCARB03 concept can work
The cooling inlets around the Racing Bulls power unit initially appeared significantly oversized. The expectation was that such a conservative cooling solution could improve reliability but impose a substantial aerodynamic and performance penalty.
Instead, the Faenza-based team has defied those early expectations. The VCARB03 has developed into one of the most consistent cars in the midfield and has regularly converted its performance into points.
At the halfway stage of the season, Racing Bulls sits fifth in the Constructors’ Championship with 66 points, five ahead of Alpine. The Enstone team, which switched to Mercedes power for 2026, remains its closest direct rival.
Racing Bulls has managed to place at least one car inside the top 10 at every Grand Prix apart from Miami. The Florida weekend was the clear low point of its campaign, with both cars missing the points in the Sprint as well as Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Aggressive Racing Bulls upgrade programme delivers results
Racing Bulls anticipated that the season could present difficulties and responded with one of the grid’s most persistent development programmes. Apart from the Japanese Grand Prix, the Italian team has introduced new components virtually everywhere it has raced.
The first substantial package arrived in Miami after changes to the calendar disrupted the original development schedule, while another significant step followed soon afterwards. Belgium then produced one of the most visible revisions of the season.
At Spa-Francorchamps, Racing Bulls introduced substantial changes around the sidepods, engine cover and roll-hoop inlet, together with modifications to the brake drum and rear wing. The altered shape of the cooling intake made the package particularly easy to identify.
The relentless upgrade programme has allowed the engineers to refine a concept that already offered a solid starting point. Rather than abandoning the unusual solutions that attracted attention during testing, Racing Bulls has continued developing them and extracting more performance as the season has progressed.
Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad maximise Racing Bulls’ potential
Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad have also played an important role in converting the VCARB03’s potential into results. Lawson is enjoying a particularly strong campaign, while Lindblad has impressed as the only rookie on the 2026 Formula 1 grid.
Their respective positions in the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings underline how effectively Racing Bulls has capitalised on its opportunities during the opening half of the year.
Two weekends stand out in particular: Monaco and Great Britain. In both Grands Prix, Racing Bulls maximised the circumstances to secure sixth place for Liam Lawson and seventh for Arvid Lindblad.
Those double points finishes demonstrated not only the underlying pace of the car but also the team’s ability to execute clean weekends when opportunities emerged. Silverstone was particularly significant, with Racing Bulls showing that it could finish comfortably ahead of several cars from traditionally stronger teams.
Racing Bulls engineers rewarded for unconventional approach
The first half of the season has reinforced Racing Bulls’ reputation for producing technically interesting solutions. The Faenza engineering group has frequently demonstrated a willingness to pursue ideas that differ from the more conventional approaches elsewhere on the grid.
Introducing a solution that initially attracts criticism is one thing; subsequently proving through results that the underlying reasoning was correct is considerably harder. Racing Bulls has managed to do exactly that with several aspects of the VCARB03.
The success should provide additional confidence as the team continues refining its package. Further improvements from the Red Bull power unit programme could also increase the car’s potential during the remainder of this regulatory cycle.
Predicting how far Racing Bulls can progress over the coming years remains difficult because competition in the midfield is exceptionally close. However, if the team can establish itself as a regular contender for fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship throughout the current regulations, its engineers will have every reason to consider the project a success.
Racing Bulls targets fifth place ahead of Alpine
The immediate objective for the remainder of 2026 is straightforward: protect fifth place and continue beating Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto’s Alpine as consistently as possible.
Alpine remains the most significant direct threat, sitting only five points behind Racing Bulls at the summer break. Both teams have shown enough performance to make the fight for best of the rest behind Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull one of the most competitive battles of the championship.
Aston Martin could also become a factor if the Honda power unit and its recent development progress allow the Silverstone team to make a substantial step during the second half of the season. Fernando Alonso has already expressed confidence in the team’s revised package and the prospect of further Aston Martin gains.
For now, however, Racing Bulls has built a considerable advantage over Aston Martin and can focus primarily on the battle with Alpine. If Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad maintain their current consistency while the VCARB03 continues to develop, the Faenza team has put itself in a strong position to finish 2026 as Formula 1’s leading midfield operation.
