Yuki Tsunoda and the opportunity at Red Bull
Suddenly, and when he least expected it, Yuki Tsunoda was given the chance to fulfill his dream and drive for Red Bull. The Japanese driver will even start at his home track – Suzuka – and in front of his fans.
It will be a dream debut, but in Formula 1, dreams often turn into nightmares. Liam Lawson knows this, having just handed over the wheel of the RB21 to him, and Yuki Tsunoda himself knows it too, as he does not want to make any mistakes, but that doesn’t mean he intends to race on Sunday with low expectations. Also, unlike Liam Lawson, the Japanese driver has four years of experience in Formula 1, which could help him in difficult moments. This is precisely what team principal Christian Horner is relying on when explaining the reason behind Yuki Tsunoda’s promotion to Red Bull: the Brit believes that Yuki Tsunoda might struggle with the sudden car change, but he’s confident that his experience will be a great asset to the team.
Christian Horner’s words
“There’s a risk that Yuki could also face difficulties, but Yuki Tsunoda is a driver with four years of experience, and the engineers will be able to use that to help him with the car’s development for the rest of the season,” Horner said to Sky Sports UK. “For him, suddenly driving the Red Bull is a tough task, but we made this decision early on so that Yuki can make a big impact for the rest of the year.”
At the moment, Christian Horner is not concerned with the future. Yuki Tsunoda will have to earn his confirmation through performances: “Yuki has a contract for several years ahead, we have options on him for the future, but right now our focus is on the present. He’s earned the opportunity, and now it’s up to him to make the most of it.” – he said ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix weekend.
