Christian Horner just can’t stay silent, especially when his Red Bull team is under attack. He decided to respond definitively to McLaren after the insinuations of the past month. The team principal of the Austrian team clarified Racing Bulls’ position.
McLaren’s criticisms came after the Singapore GP. In that case, Daniel Ricciardo was called into the pits to attempt the fastest lap. The Australian wouldn’t have received the additional point because he was outside the top ten, which raised McLaren’s suspicions.
Are Red Bull and Racing Bulls really independent? McLaren’s accusation
Daniel Ricciardo’s fastest lap took the point away from Lando Norris, who held it at that time. Racing Bulls’ strategy disadvantaged the British driver, who is contending for the drivers’ championship against Max Verstappen. So, without hesitation, McLaren accused Red Bull and Racing Bulls of forming an unauthorized alliance.
Now, after the Mexican Grand Prix, Christian Horner had the opportunity to refute the rumors. In the Mexican race, there was an intense duel between home favorite Sergio Perez and Liam Lawson, with the two even risking taking each other out. Sergio Perez, moreover, emerged “wounded” from the duel, with the side of his Red Bull torn open.
Christian Horner seized the moment to clarify. “What happened on track shows that the two teams race against each other, and despite having the same ownership, they are independent in the way they battle.”
“I simply believe Daniel wanted to finish the race (and his career) on a high note. Maybe it was an idea intentionally made by VCARB. But you should ask them about it, not me,” concluded the British team principal.
