Austrian GP, Red Bull Challenges McLaren
After five consecutive pole positions in Austria, Max Verstappen will have to start from seventh in Red Bull’s home Grand Prix. A disappointing result, partly explained by an ill-timed yellow flag caused by Pierre Gasly’s spin in Q3, but even the reigning World Champion admitted that, with a clean lap, the second row was likely the best possible outcome.
Qualifying sets up the Grand Prix for Lando Norris, but Red Bull still has its sights set on the win. Max Verstappen has shown strong race pace, and the team believes McLaren still needs to prove itself under pressure—just as seen in Canada.
Christian Horner’s words
Team principal Christian Horner issued a direct challenge to the papaya team: “Austria is like a home race for us. And in the end, there aren’t that many McLaren fans here compared to other places. Our goal is to make those who are here cry on Sunday because we’ve done a better job,” he told Kleine Zeitung.
“Max is having an incredible year, he’s driving brilliantly,” Christian Horner added. “We brought an upgrade here in Spielberg and we’ll bring another one in Silverstone. Plus, updates are scheduled for races 15 and 16 (Zandvoort and Monza, after the summer break). Sometimes, improving by just half a tenth can make a big difference.” – the Red Bull team boss concluded ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix.
