From a near-certain championship to a nightmare, McLaren has been disqualified: the result of the Las Vegas GP proved “frustrating” for Lando Norris.
After the dust settled, the decision arrived that could change everything in the final two races of the season. At Las Vegas, the skid blocks on Lando Norris’s and Oscar Piastri’s cars were found to be non-compliant with the regulations. McLaren was disqualified, and Max Verstappen drew closer in the championship standings. The outcome took Lando Norris from being a championship frontrunner to suddenly seeing the title fight reopen in just a few hours.
Lando Norris described the situation as extremely frustrating. The second-place finish he had initially achieved behind Max Verstappen had effectively put him in control of the championship, but the post-race ruling changed everything.
McLaren disqualified in Las Vegas: Norris sees Verstappen close
Lando Norris, McLaren – 390 points
Max Verstappen, Red Bull – 366 points (-24)
Oscar Piastri, McLaren – 366 points (-24)
In the closing laps, McLaren had done its best to avoid any problems. Norris had visibly slowed down, even performing an unusually heavy lift-and-coast strategy. The team later confirmed that this management had been necessary due to an issue with the car, which ultimately led to the disqualification.
With the ruling, Lando Norris’s 18-point advantage on the championship board was erased. He remains at 390 points, while Verstappen now closes in at 24 points behind. Norris acknowledged the frustration of losing so many points and admitted that the team had struggled to find the right balance in Las Vegas.
He also stated that there is nothing more that can be done about Las Vegas and that the team must now focus on the Qatar GP, aiming to deliver the best performance in every session.
