Carlos Sainz, the first driver in Madrid
Starting from next season, the Madrid street circuit will become the venue for the new Spanish Grand Prix until 2035, while the future of Barcelona remains uncertain. The fact remains that, pending the completion of the final works on the MadRing, no F1 car had ever raced on the only usable sections of the track before last weekend.
The first to do so could only be Carlos Sainz, star of the MADRING Roadshow in front of an audience of 80,000 people at the wheel of the Williams FW45. Carlos Sainz, who was also appointed ambassador of the Madrid circuit, thus ‘baptized’ the track in his hometown, ready to welcome F1 again for the first time since 1981, when the Circus raced at Jarama, 20 km from the Spanish capital.
“It’s a dream come true for me to return to Madrid, to drive the FW45 on the streets where I grew up,” he said after the event. “I will never forget driving this car in front of a crowd of 80,000 people from all over the world. It was a very emotional day, but it’s just a taste of what awaits us in 2026. Next year will be a huge event for Madrid, which will become part of F1, and I can’t wait!” – the Williams driver concluded.
