The Spanish driver has achieved all his success with Ferrari, but from 2025, he will find himself in a team facing significantly greater challenges, unable to immediately guarantee him a consistent fight at the front. Carlos Sainz has remained realistic about Williams’ limitations but remains optimistic and has outlined a major goal he aims to accomplish.
Williams has not been a frontrunner for many years. Their last victory dates back to 2012, while their most recent championship win was in 1997. Carlos Sainz could be a turning point for the team, as he has a track record of helping improve the squads he has joined in Formula 1.
When he arrived at Ferrari, the team was coming off a disastrous 2020 Formula 1 season. Gradually, during his years with the Scuderia, Carlos Sainz contributed to Maranello’s resurgence. He had done the same a few years earlier at McLaren—when he joined the Woking-based team, they had just finished sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, and during his two seasons there, the team made significant progress.
Carlos Sainz’s objective with Williams
Williams members now hope that history will repeat itself with their team. Discussing his decision to join the Grove-based squad, Carlos Sainz explained why his arrival coincides with a pivotal moment in Williams’ development.
“This is my tenth year in Formula 1, and I am joining Williams at a very important time, as the team is undergoing some key changes in its history.”
Carlos Sainz has won four Grands Prix with Ferrari, but he still has one major ambition left, which he openly admitted. He is fully aware that the journey with Williams will be difficult and that the team will not be ready to compete at the front immediately—it will take time. Despite this, he stated: “Nothing would make me happier or prouder. It would certainly be the proudest moment of my career if one day I could step onto the podium with this team.”
Carlos Sainz is confident that he can be a valuable asset to the team and believes he can contribute to its revival. “I want to play my part in this process and help a historic team. I believe this is the second most successful team in Formula 1, and being part of that journey back to the top is what motivates me.” – the former Ferrari driver concluded.
