Sainz to Mercedes in place of Antonelli? The Spaniard clears up his future
Carlos Sainz has responded to the latest Formula 1 rumors suggesting a potential switch to Mercedes in exchange for Kimi Antonelli. The Williams driver enjoyed his best weekend of the season so far in Baku, qualifying second and converting that performance into a podium finish on Sunday. After an initial adaptation phase with the FW47, the Spaniard finally showcased his pace and ability to deliver results for Grove. During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend, he also addressed speculation about a possible move to the Brackley-based team.
The podium came as a crucial result for Carlos Sainz, putting behind him a challenging period at Williams. His comparison with teammate Alexander Albon had previously highlighted the Thai driver’s greater experience with the team, but this strong showing proved Carlos Sainz’s speed and his ability to seize opportunities when they arise.
The truth about talks with Toto Wolff
In an interview with Sky Sport F1, Carlos Sainz was asked directly about the rumors of a future at Mercedes in place of Kimi Antonelli. Ironically, the Italian rookie delivered an impressive performance himself in Baku, finishing fourth and showing the team he had regained confidence at a crucial time.
“I have a contract with Williams. I know that Toto hasn’t called me or his friend James Vowles. These are just noises, as always happens in Formula 1,” Carlos Sainz explained. “I don’t listen to them. I’m focused on this project and honestly, I think I’m in the right place at the right time.”
Commitment to Williams and future goals
Following Carlos Sainz’s statements over the weekend, it is clear that he has every intention of continuing with his current team. Williams has been steadily building a stronger project, and the upcoming 2026 regulation changes represent a significant opportunity for growth. The Spaniard’s third place in Azerbaijan was the result of consistent race pace throughout the Grand Prix, underlining the major progress made by the team this season.
The former Ferrari driver’s comments suggest that, despite the constant speculation in the paddock, he remains fully committed to the Williams project and confident that he has made the right career move at a decisive moment in Formula 1’s future.
