Kimi Antonelli heads to Silverstone determined to spoil teammate George Russell’s home race, with the Formula 1 championship leader eager to bounce back after two frustrating weekends in which he believes the results failed to reflect his true pace.
Antonelli targets Russell at Silverstone
Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrives at the British Grand Prix looking to make a statement against his Mercedes teammate on one of the most important weekends of George Russell’s season. The championship leader is hungry for redemption following his technical retirement in Barcelona and a third-place finish at the Red Bull Ring that ultimately left him feeling disappointed.
While another podium was certainly a positive result, the young Italian demonstrated throughout the Austrian weekend that he possessed stronger race pace than Russell. However, circumstances played a decisive role. George Russell was able to cruise to victory without encountering major obstacles, while Max Verstappen and Antonelli both lost valuable time during key phases of the race.
Silverstone also holds special memories for Antonelli. It was at the iconic British circuit that he claimed his maiden Formula 2 victory, proving he has both the confidence and the speed to perform on one of Formula 1’s most challenging tracks. Repeating that success at Russell’s home Grand Prix is undoubtedly an objective that motivates the Italian.
Antonelli’s comments
“I’m really excited. I think this is one of the best weekends of the season, with one of the greatest circuits on the calendar and fantastic fans. I hope it will be a good weekend. The car is very competitive, but obviously we expect Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari to be fighting for the top positions as well,” Antonelli said.
“The momentum is still on my side, definitely. I’ve got a great fire inside me because I don’t think the last two races reflected the pace we actually had,” he added.
“In Barcelona, the race was going really well until we suffered that technical problem. In Austria, I felt very comfortable in the car, but during qualifying I relaxed a little too much and wasn’t able to get the maximum out of both the car and the tyres. Then, of course, there was the yellow flag situation, which George handled well and I didn’t.
“At the Red Bull Ring I lost the race in the opening laps after running wide and then having brake issues, which cost me a lot of time. Without those setbacks, I believe I would have had a much better chance of fighting for victory or at least for second place. Now I want to put everything together and achieve the best result possible.”
