Williams to appeal against Sainz penalty at Zandvoort
Williams has confirmed that it will file an appeal with the FIA against the penalty handed to Carlos Sainz at Zandvoort. The Spanish driver received a harsh sanction after his clash with Liam Lawson, with the stewards giving him ten seconds plus two penalty points on his licence. The punishment proved costly, leaving the Williams driver outside the points once again.
It has been a season of constant uphill battles for Carlos Sainz, who has yet to put together a clean weekend. However, on the eve of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, important developments have emerged.
The case has not gone unnoticed, with several drivers questioning the severity and lack of clarity in the FIA’s decision-making process. Many believe the sanction was disproportionate to the incident.
In an official team statement, Williams confirmed: “We have submitted a right of review to the FIA regarding Carlos’s penalty at Zandvoort. It is important for us to understand how to race in the future, and we hope for a positive outcome.”
Carlos Sainz expresses frustration over the penalty
Carlos Sainz also shared his disappointment during the drivers’ press conference attended by GP-News.net, making clear how difficult it was to accept the decision. “It’s very difficult. After the races I always try to control my emotions, but sometimes it’s impossible to understand certain decisions. I’ve always said that in Formula 1 we should have fixed stewards: the rules are already complex, and it would help to have the same people judging to guarantee consistency.”
Speaking about his sanction, the Spaniard insisted that “it was the result of a rushed decision, without properly analysing the data and onboard footage. Looking closely, it was clear that I did not deserve that penalty.”
It now remains to be seen whether Williams’ request will be accepted or rejected. In either case, we will keep you updated on the outcome of this important appeal.
