Carlos Sainz has decided not to take part in the race for the FIA presidency: here is his son’s reaction from Austria.
In recent months, there had been speculation about Carlos Sainz running for the FIA presidency. The father of the Williams driver had confirmed several times that he had considered taking on such a role, but ultimately made his decision just before the Austrian GP weekend.
Through a statement published on social media, the multiple rally champion announced that he had decided not to run for the FIA presidency. His decision was linked to the responsibilities such a position would require and his desire to focus on preparing for the next edition of the Dakar Rally.
The Williams driver’s words on his father’s decision
On Thursday in Spielberg, which marked the start of the Austrian GP weekend, Carlos Sainz commented on his father’s decision. “As a son, I’m not disappointed, but as a motorsport man, I am. I think several people in the paddock would have liked to see my father in that kind of role, to understand what he could have brought to the sport. Of course, we discussed it together, weighing everything that entering such an environment would have involved. I understand why he chose not to run, preferring to focus on himself. I don’t know if he might reconsider in the future. This definitely would have been the right time to try, considering the current situation and everything that’s happening. I’m not sure he’ll still be interested in a few years,” said the former Ferrari driver.
“It’s certainly no secret that drivers are unhappy with the current leadership. In recent years, there’s been little transparency on some matters, and our opinions haven’t always been taken into account. We’ve often felt overlooked, and without a doubt, something needs to change, as we’ve pointed out in various statements,” Carlos Sainz added ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix weekend at the Red Bull Ring.
