Carlos Sainz is reportedly in advanced negotiations to extend his Williams contract, with a possible announcement now expected at any time ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. Despite persistent speculation linking the Spanish driver with potential moves elsewhere for 2027, his current focus is said to be exclusively on continuing with the Grove-based team.
Carlos Sainz entered the summer break intending to assess his future carefully rather than rush into a decision. With Formula 1 now preparing to return to action, however, talks with Williams appear to have progressed significantly and could result in a new one-year agreement.
Carlos Sainz and Williams move closer to a 2027 agreement
Before the summer break, Carlos Sainz explained that he wanted time to consider the situation properly.
“The plan is to decide, but yes, we need to look at it calmly.”
A few days earlier, Carlos Sainz had also made clear that there was no predetermined deadline for making the call.
“Honestly, I don’t know, I don’t have a date yet. I’ve always said that I would wait until the summer to sit down with my team and think about it and discuss it with them, together with James Vowles and the others, about the future of the team and my future within it.”
According to MARCA, confirmation of a Williams renewal could arrive at any point from Monday, August 17. From a communications perspective, announcing the agreement before Thursday’s media activities at Zandvoort would allow Carlos Sainz and Williams to avoid entering the Dutch Grand Prix weekend with uncertainty still surrounding his future.
Whether that happens will depend on whether every detail of the negotiations can be finalised in time.
Williams remains Sainz’s priority despite 2027 rumours
After the first two weeks of the summer break, discussions remain ongoing. Carlos Sainz and his management are focusing exclusively on Williams and the conditions attached to a potential extension.
Formula 1 contracts can contain numerous clauses, particularly provisions allowing a driver to leave if a more competitive opportunity becomes available. Carlos Sainz’s deal has already attracted attention for that reason, with reports previously suggesting that his Williams contract includes a route to a potential 2027 move under certain circumstances.
That flexibility is particularly important for a driver who remains highly regarded across the paddock. Carlos Sainz is arguably operating at one of the strongest stages of his career, yet the car he joined Williams to drive has failed to meet the expectations surrounding the team’s new regulatory-era project and has instead suffered a significant decline in competitiveness.
Williams’ 2026 decline complicates Sainz decision
The new Formula 1 regulations were supposed to provide the platform for Williams to take a major step forward. Instead, after 11 Grands Prix and roughly half the season, the sporting disappointment has been considerable.
The team no longer has a car capable of regularly reaching Q2 or challenging for points, while Williams has also struggled to identify a clear explanation for the extent of its regression. The situation has become increasingly concerning ahead of the second half of the championship, with the team already admitting that its planned Baku upgrade will not be enough to solve all of the FW48’s problems.
Those difficulties inevitably form part of Carlos Sainz’s decision. His move to Grove was made with the expectation that Williams could benefit significantly from the regulatory reset, but the competitive trajectory has so far fallen short of those hopes.
The €30 million question surrounding Carlos Sainz’s new deal
The current expectation is that Carlos Sainz would prefer to renew for only one season. Such an agreement would allow him to remain with Williams for 2027 while maintaining flexibility for the following year should a more competitive opportunity emerge.
The financial terms are also expected to improve. Carlos Sainz’s current contract has been valued at around €13 million per season, and any new agreement would likely compensate him to some extent for the performance Williams has been unable to provide on track.
The reported figure would nevertheless be different from the €30 million salary that has previously been suggested. Audi could potentially be an attractive destination for Carlos Sainz, but that route does not currently appear to be available to him.
For now, the negotiations continue, but the direction appears increasingly clear. Carlos Sainz is focusing on Williams, a one-year extension is reportedly the preferred solution, and confirmation could arrive before Formula 1’s Dutch Grand Prix weekend begins at Zandvoort.
