The cornerstone of the new Williams
Among the many drivers who switched teams during the latest wild Formula 1 driver market, Carlos Sainz was one of the biggest movers. The former Ferrari driver has joined Williams, where he will share the garage with Alex Albon, who in recent seasons has become a key figure for the Grove-based team. Under the leadership of former Mercedes strategist James Vowles, the team aims to move up the grid, and this year, they may have assembled the right driver pairing to achieve that goal. How their relationship will develop remains to be seen once the on-track action begins, but for now, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon appear to have established a strong bond.
No politics
In a video published on Williams’ official YouTube channel, showing Sainz’s first day at the team’s factory, the Madrid-born driver had warm words for his new teammate, who, like him, came up through Red Bull’s driver program. Interviewed by James Vowles in front of the team’s employees, Carlos Sainz described the Thai driver as “a very easygoing person, similar to me—no bull***t, no politics or anything like that. And I think he’s a really good guy.”
Ups and downs with Charles Leclerc at Ferrari
During his four-year stint at Ferrari, Carlos Sainz had a love-hate relationship with his now-former teammate Charles Leclerc. While they often showed a strong bond off the track, their seasons together included intense on-track battles and sharp radio exchanges. The latest verbal clash occurred during the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, when Charles Leclerc publicly accused the Spaniard of not acting as a “team player.”
However, at the end of the season, Carlos Sainz posted a heartfelt social media message thanking Leclerc for their time together in red. The success of his relationship with Alex Albon could play a crucial role in Williams’ journey back to the top of Formula 1.
