In recent months, there has been a lot of talk about the Power Units, particularly the possibility of returning to V10 engines. However, after a meeting held in Bahrain, the members temporarily set aside the idea. Cadillac GM, which will become the 11th F1 team in 2026, has already begun designing the 2029 engine.
The two Cadillac cars will not use their own Power Units initially. Upon its entry in 2026, the team will be a customer team for Ferrari. This agreement already has an expiration date: 2029. That year, Cadillac’s own engines, developed in collaboration with General Motors, will debut.
Although the Cadillac engine will debut in five years, the team’s engineers have already begun working on the Power Unit’s design. In Miami, the up-and-coming team organized an event during the F1 weekend, where the president of GM revealed the team’s development progress. As he explained, the team has already started the first prototype of the engine that will be used in the 2029 car. He emphasized that this is only an early version and that engineers will continue developing the final version in the coming years.
This will be made possible by the development of a new facility for the F1 team. By 2027, engineers will have access to a new site in Concord, North Carolina, where they are already working, albeit in a temporary structure.
The US will not be the only base for Cadillac GM. In the UK, the team will also have a facility dedicated to the design and development of the chassis, which will be used starting in 2026. During the Miami event, an update was also provided on this matter. “We’re working on the cars. We’ve been in the wind tunnel for a long time. The chassis is in, and we continue to add people to the team. There are so many workflows happening all at once,” they said.
